Safety precautions when operating an electric fusion welding machine

Oct 07, 2024

I. Electrical safety
1. Prevent electric shock
Good grounding: Make sure the electric fusion welding machine has a reliable grounding connection. Grounding can conduct current to the earth when the welding machine leaks electricity, preventing the operator from getting an electric shock. Before use, check whether the grounding cable is firmly connected, and the grounding resistance should meet safety standards (generally not more than 4Ω).
Insulation inspection: Regularly check the power cord, output cord and electrical insulation inside the electric fusion welding machine. If the outer sheath of the wire is found to be damaged, aged or the internal insulation layer is damaged, it should be replaced immediately. Use an insulation resistance meter (megohmmeter) to measure the insulation resistance. For the power cord and output cord, the insulation resistance should not be less than 0.5MΩ.
Avoid wet hand operation: The operator must keep his hands dry when operating the welding machine. Wet hand operation increases the risk of electric shock because water is a good conductor of electricity. If your hands are stained with water, you should wipe them dry before operating the welding machine.
2. Prevent electrical short circuit
Line inspection: Before using the electric fusion welding machine, check whether the power cord and output cord are damaged or short-circuited. Make sure that the wires are not squeezed, twisted, or in contact with other metal objects. If any abnormality is found in the wires, they should be repaired or replaced in time.
Avoid overload: Do not use electric fusion pipe fittings that exceed the rated power of the electric fusion welder for welding. Overload may cause the internal circuit of the welder to overheat, burn, or even cause an electrical fire. According to the rated power of the welder and the welding requirements of the pipe fittings, the pipe fittings should be reasonably selected for welding.
2. Personal protection
1. Eye protection
During electric fusion welding, strong light and spatter may be generated. Operators should wear protective glasses to prevent strong light from causing damage to the eyes, such as retinal burns, and also to prevent spatter generated during welding from entering the eyes. Protective glasses should have appropriate shading numbers to adapt to the light intensity during welding.
2. Hand protection
Wear insulating gloves to protect your hands from electric shock and burns. Insulating gloves should have sufficient insulation and heat resistance to withstand the voltage during welding and the high-temperature parts that may be touched. When operating the welder, make sure that the gloves are not damaged and are worn properly without affecting the flexibility of operation.
3. Equipment safety
1. Correct operation sequence
Use the electric fusion welding machine in the correct operation sequence. First, connect the electric fusion pipe fittings and pipes, then connect the welding machine output line to the pipe fittings, then turn on the welding machine power and set the parameters, and finally start the welding program. After welding is completed, stop welding first, and then remove the welding machine output line and the connection between the pipe fittings and pipes after cooling. Failure to follow the correct operation sequence may cause equipment damage or welding failure.
2. Equipment maintenance and inspection
Maintain and inspect the electric fusion welding machine regularly. Before each use, check whether the appearance, power cord, output line, operation panel and other components of the welding machine are normal. Clean the dust inside the welding machine regularly and check whether the electrical components are burnt, loose or other abnormal conditions. If the equipment is found to be faulty, it should be stopped immediately and repaired by professionals.
During the use of the welding machine, do not disassemble or modify the internal structure of the welding machine at will. Unprofessional disassembly or modification may damage the original circuit structure of the welding machine, cause equipment failure, and even cause safety accidents.
IV. Environmental safety
1. Good ventilation
The electric fusion welder may produce a small amount of odor or smoke during operation. The welder should be used in a well-ventilated environment to prevent the accumulation of odor and smoke from causing harm to the health of the operator. If used indoors, ventilation equipment such as exhaust fans can be used to maintain air circulation.
2. Keep away from flammable and explosive materials
Place the electric fusion welder away from flammable and explosive materials. Electric sparks may be generated during welding. If there are flammable and explosive materials around, such as gasoline, liquefied gas, paper, etc., it is easy to cause fire or explosion accidents. Make sure there are no flammable and explosive materials within a safe distance of at least 1 meter around the welder.
