How should pressure testing be performed correctly after welding?

Jun 20, 2025

1. Preparation
Installation of pressure gauge: Install a pressure gauge at the water inlet end, and ensure that the range of the pressure gauge is 1.5 to 2 times the test pressure, and the accuracy is not less than 1.5 levels.
Water injection and exhaust: Slowly inject water into the pipe under no pressure through a pressure press. When injecting water, open the exhaust hole to ensure that the air in the pipe is completely exhausted.
Close the pipe: After the pipe is filled with water, close the exhaust hole to ensure that the pipe is sealed.
2. Gradually increase the pressure
Initial pressure increase: Gradually increase the pipeline pressure and observe the pressure gauge until it reaches 50% of the test pressure. Check whether there is leakage at the pipe interface and connection.
Final pressure increase: If there is no leakage, continue to increase the pressure to the test pressure and stabilize the pressure for 30 minutes. If the pressure drops during this period, water can be injected to supplement the pressure, but it must not be higher than the test pressure.
3. Check for leakage
Appearance inspection: During the pressure stabilization period, carefully check whether there is leakage at the pipe interface, accessories, etc. If there is leakage, the pressure test should be stopped, and the cause should be found and resolved before re-testing.
Pressure monitoring: After stabilizing the pressure for 30 minutes, observe the pressure gauge. If there is no obvious pressure drop, it indicates that the quality of the pipeline connection is good.
4. Pressure relief inspection
Pressure relief to 50%: After the pressure stabilization is completed, the pressure is released to 50% of the maximum test pressure.
Continuous observation: If the pressure is stable at 50% of the maximum working pressure, or even there is a pressure increase, it indicates that there is no leakage.
Final inspection: Continue to perform the appearance inspection for another 90 minutes. If there is still no leakage, the pressure test is qualified.
5. Precautions
Avoid bad weather: Avoid welding and pressure testing under bad weather conditions such as strong winds, heavy rain or direct sunlight.
Regularly calibrate equipment: Ensure that the pressure gauge and pressure press are calibrated and verified regularly to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the equipment.
Safety measures: During the pressure test, a restricted area should be demarcated and no unauthorized personnel should enter.
