  • Description

A hot melt butt welding machine is a specialized welding device that uses hot melt butt welding technology to weld thermoplastic pipes and fittings. It heats two pipe ends to a specified temperature and then applies sufficient pressure to fuse them together, forming a durable and reliable pipe connection.

This equipment is mainly used for welding PE, PP, HDPE, PVDF, PPR, PB, and other plastic pipes and fittings, and is widely used in engineering projects involving high-pressure water, natural gas, and chemical liquid pipelines.

    Composition and Structure

A complete welding machine typically consists of the following four parts:

    1. Frame: Used to hold the pipes, usually made of high-strength aluminum alloy, with a robust yet lightweight structure.

    2. Hydraulic System: Provides the precise pressure required for butt welding, ensuring stable weld quality.

    3. Heating Plate: Coated with a non-stick coating (such as PTFE/Teflon) and equipped with an independent temperature control system for precise temperature control.

    4. Milling Cutter: Used to cut and smooth the pipe ends, ensuring a smooth end face perpendicular to the pipe axis; usually equipped with a safety limit switch.

    Butt Fusion Welding Process
    1. Preparation: Cut and clean pipe ends; secure in clamps
    2. Milling: Use an electric planing tool to create flat, parallel surfaces
    3. Alignment: Adjust clamps to ensure misalignment ≤ 10% of wall thickness
    4. Heating: Press pipe ends against the heating plate (typically 210°C–235°C) until proper bead formation
    5. Switching: Quickly remove the heating plate and bring pipe ends together
    6. Fusion: Apply specified pressure to form the joint
    7. Cooling: Maintain pressure during cooling phase-do not disturb the joint
    8. Inspection: Visually inspect the weld bead for uniformity

    Advantages

    1. High Joint Strength: Joint strength is equal to or greater than the pipe body, exhibiting tensile, impact, and high-pressure resistance.

    2. Zero Leakage: No fittings or rubber rings required; integrated structure completely eliminates the risk of leakage.

    3. Corrosion Resistance and Long Service Life: The joint material matches the pipe material, resisting acids and alkalis, and boasting a service life of up to 50 years.

    4. High Efficiency and Economy: Fast welding speed (approximately 5 minutes per φ200mm joint), eliminating the need for fittings and reducing material and labor costs.

    5. Easy Operation: Modular design, easy to learn and use; fully automatic models minimize human error.

Applications of Hot Melt Butt Welding Machines
Butt fusion welding machines are widely used across multiple industries:
Gas Distribution: PE pipe networks for natural gas delivery
Water Supply: HDPE potable water and drainage pipelines
Mining: Slurry and chemical transport pipes
    Agriculture: Irrigation systems
Infrastructure: Sewage treatment and stormwater management
Industrial: Chemical processing and offshore pipelines

    FAQ

Q: What pipe materials can a hot melt butt welding machine handle?
A: Most machines support HDPE, PE, PP, PVDF, and PPR thermoplastic materials.

Q: What is the difference between butt fusion and electrofusion?
A: Butt fusion joins pipe ends directly using a heated plate, while electrofusion uses fittings with built-in heating wires.

Q: How do I choose between manual and hydraulic models?
A: Manual machines suit small pipes and tight budgets; hydraulic models are essential for diameters above 200mm and high-volume work.

Q: What certifications should I look for?
A: Ensure compliance with ISO 12176-1, ISO 21307, and CE marking for European markets.
